Custom Deck Builds: Two Kansas City Backyard Transformations

When it comes to designing an outdoor living space you’ll actually use, nothing beats a custom-built deck tailored to your home, your lifestyle, and the way you entertain. At Third Space Design | Build, we’ve had the pleasure of transforming two very different Kansas City backyards into functional, beautiful outdoor retreats. Here’s a look at both projects, from concept to completion.

Located on Falcon Ridge Drive in Lenexa, KS, this project called for a complete transformation of an aging deck into a true outdoor living destination. Homeowners Donna and Steve Young were ready to say goodbye to their old, worn deck and start fresh with a design built for entertaining.

The scope of work included:

• Full demolition of the existing deck and old materials
• Two-tier deck design: an 18′ x 20′ upper deck and a 16′ x 16′ lower deck
• TimberTech Legacy composite decking with a double picture frame, finished in Reclaimed Chestnut
• Black Verticable aluminum railing system around the deck and stairs
• A custom outdoor grill island built with 6061 aluminum tubing, HardiBoard, and Huron Old Country Ledge stone veneer
• Level 3 Lennon Brushed granite countertops
• A 6′ wide by 9′ tall gas fireplace, finished to match the kitchen in stone veneer, complete with a 60″ stone mantle, ceramic log set, and a built-in granite-lined inset for a 65″ outdoor TV
• A full outdoor kitchen package: Blaze LTE+ 4-burner grill, double door stainless steel storage, 24″ stainless refrigerator, trash drawer, and triple drawer
• New gas and electrical lines run to the kitchen and fireplace area
• A cedar screen wall above the grill area for added privacy
• A cottonwood stone retaining wall and flagstone steppers connecting the deck stairs to the lawn

Our second featured project took place at a home in Mission Hills, KS, where the goal was a new deck and a new sliding door connecting the indoor living space with a new and open outdoor deck. The clean modern finishes of this deck will stand up to the elements for years to come.

The scope of work included:

• Complete deck construction with treated lumber framing system and concrete piers
• Wolf Serenity composite decking in Amberwood, with a single picture frame detail matching the decking color and material
• Westbury Aluminum Tuscany Black railing system
• Two 4′ wide staircases connecting the deck down to the lawn and driveway
• A 1×6 rough cedar skirting installed horizontally around the entire deck, with a cutout for hose access underneath

The result is a clean, low-maintenance composite deck with a warm cedar accent underneath, giving the home great curb appeal from every angle of the yard.
